Coming To An End

   It is the end of the year and it is time to start the final copy of our ethnography. There are different ways we can format our papers. In the beginning of the year we read Iowa 80. Iowa 80 is a truck stop rest stop and it is the largest in the world. The author broke the piece up into different sections by the places he went too. Each place had a subtitle before it, so the reader knew he was talking about the different places. Another one we read was about a bowling alley. The author of this piece had subtitles, but it was not about the different parts of the bowling alley. It was separated by different times she went there and who she interviewed. It is nice too see the different styles so we have different examples to help us with our paper. The format the bowling paper I think would work well with my paper, because the places are similar. Reading this paper was fun because of the titles, such as My Life In Rented Shoes. Titles like this kept me interested in the paper, but also it was about a place many people can relate to.

Interviews

I have conducted and interview before. I have been interviewed and interviewed others. It was informal interviews. It was difficult being interviewed because I was not clear on what I was being asked and also he did not have the questions on had. He forgot what he wanted to ask and had to schedule another interview. In the reading for this week I learned what I have done wrong when interviewing others. When Interviewing people there needs to be some structure yet there needs to be flexibility. The informants may make a comment that you had not anticipated. There are two questions used when conducting an interview, open and closed questions. Closed questions are ones that do not need an explanation. Most of the time an interviewer will start out with these type of questions. Open questions are more in-depth. Open question start a conversation form. Deciding what questions are need helps, but unless you know how to listen then the questions are useless. A good listener has eye contact, does not fiddle with objects, and does not check the time. The interviewer needs to know when to let the informations stray from the question and when yo get back on topic.

WEEBLY

    For our class we have to create a website to use as our portfolio. Some students in the class already have a website from last semester. For the knew students they are going to have a lot to do.  It was hard to start out. If you have never created a website before there is a lot too. It is easy, but very time consuming. Weebly is an easy site to use. There are videos to explain how to use things. Mostly you just have to sit and play around with the site. Also what is nice is weebly is free. You can buy your domain name, but there is no real need to. 

    There are many different ways you can set up the portfolio. It can formal or informal. Some people made it like a business website very gray, black and white. There was not much too it. Others, like me, chose to make it more fun. I wanted it to represent parts of me. It was helpful to look back at Mrs. Williams old students websites. Its nice to see different ways you can set up your site, but also look at their past work. 

Its a nice writing tool to have. It helps to see how other people did their projects and what suggestions they have. 

Bowling

In the essay Slide, Roll, Slam the author does an amazing job of describing the ally. The paper starts off with a strong tittle. It does not tell you exactly what the paper is about, but it is interesting enough so it will draw in people who come across it.  The paper starts of strong with the sentence "The sounds of shoes sliding against smooth wood lanes and bowling balls rolling like thunder then slamming against multiple pins rings in my ears." The write did a great job of describing the bowling ally. The reader call really picture what is going on. You can tell the author spent a lot of time at her site.  This allowed her to be certain about her conclusion. It was helpful to understand what she was describing because she wrote about everything at the ally. 

MHS/Movie Theater

  I haven't decided on where I would like to go for this project. One choice is to go back to my old high school and observe a Senior Seminar course. Like most high school courses the class is selected at random, so the type of people range. I did take this course in high school but each teacher runs the class differently and I would not be with my old teacher. I want to see how different the class is compared to mine because it is a a different teacher, but also a different grade. I would like to see how well this class is handling this course. Also how they handle the teacher as well.
  The second place I would looking at is a movie theater. Everyone loves movies and so many different people go to them. I spend a lot of time at the movies and while I am waiting for my movie to start I like to listen to people and hear what they say about the movie they have just seen. I would like to see how different people act when they are at the movies not just getting food and tickets but in the theater.

Truckers

 Friday Night at Iowa 80 was very well written piece. Personally it would not be something I would have read on my own. It was boring during some pats and it was long, but it was written very nicely. I had no idea what Iowa 80 was until I read this. The way he portay’s  it in away you feel like you there (even if you don’t want to be).

Rhetorical Analysis

    One reading assigned this week was about Rhetorical Analysis. Before reading this I did not know what rhetorical analysis was. I knew what rhetoric was and what analysis was, so I had an idea to what it was. It is a way of understanding and interpreting texts by examining the rhetorical devices used, the context of the text, and the audience. In away we use rhetorical analysis everyday . Under the section Understanding Rhetorical Analysis the write says "You react to what others say or write all the time", but its not just writing. We look at commercials, billboards, and Ads that are around us everyday and we have some type of reaction to them. Such as the rains picture they use.
    Most people have hears of Sun Made Raisins and seen the young pretty girl on the cover. In the book the picture has changed to a skeleton of a women. At first I only noticed the skeleton and then I read the text underneath. The picture of the skeleton would not be the best choice for advertising the raisins. The people selling the raisins (the topic) are trying to show parents (their audience) how healthy and great raisins are for their children. Would you rather buy a carton with a healthy young girl or a skeleton. I think that answer is easy. This only one of the helpful ways this assignment helped us with Rhetorical Analysis.
  It tells us to choose text we know how to analyze and choose text that "investigate interesting arguments that o interesting things". Also we need to choose text we can learn more about, which goes along with text that we can work with. Some text might be interesting to write about, but if you cannot understand the text, Ad, or film then what good is your analysis going to be. All these are helpful tools to have in mind when writing.

Who revises anyway?

  I don't know about other people I never revised my work in high school unless the teacher made me. I did not want to waste my time. Plus the computer has spell check so why correct it myself. In HTWA there is a comic strip about how to revise your work. The comic is true. How many times do you sit at your computer with food trying to make your paper sound right? You sit there for hours and you can’t figure out what’s wrong. I like how they have the student going out and getting fresh air and doing something else. Although most of us aren’t going to go to a mountain but you get the point. The two readings kind of give you a check list or helpful hints to look back on when writing. The “checklist” will give students away to stay on topic. I already have the pages marked off.

Celeberties

     A twisted world by James Mc Morrow Jr. had an interesting take on politics. It was interesting to think about celebrities running the country. Our lives would be different if they were to run the country because yes they have played the role of a president or a Major in the Army. The issues we considered important would be thrown out the window. At the end of the reading Morrow wrote " the people we have put in office are those ones best suited there. As citizens we are bit too quick to judge how our political representative have done their jobs. We need to realize that in order to dig ourselves out of this massive hole we are in we need to be patient, no matter how difficult that may be in times of hardship."
    As citizens we think it is okay to judge what out politicians  are doing, but how do we know exactly what is going on. We voted and chose these people questioning them is questioning yourself.

My Project

   For the literacy project I am going to either do a power point, movie or slide show of my work at the daycare. I have been working at the Kids Klub Daycare in Mashpee for two years. Over these past years I have learned how to communicate and understand people better. Being a teacher you need to know the parents as well as you know your students. Kids and parents are all different, so you have to approach situations differently with each one. My people skills have greatly improved since working there.

Project Options

   The project that stood out most was Music more than reading. The tittle is interesting where you are willing to watch a few seconds to see what it is about. Also the music had a good beat where your sitting there nodding you head and dancing a little in your seat. It was nice that he changed the song when he was telling about the change in his life. Also there is not may lyrics sung, so you can focus on what he wrote instead of singing along. Also the oder was nice. It started out in the past to the present day. There also was a little humor in there so it wasn't such a serious piece.
    I think his project was relatable to because it is hard to make friends, everyone has been there at some point. Friendship doesn't always come easy, it helps when you join something your passionate about and you find people like you. The message is important. This is something I would show to a group of junior high kids who are trying to find there way. It is a good piece to show at a challenge day. It was my favorite project out of the four.
